PLEASE BE SURE TO RUN SNDSETUP.BAT BEFORE PLAYING!

Thank you for downloading my scenario! This is an updated version of
a scenario I created last year. Considering the recent graphical
breaktroughs of the scenario-making community, I decided to revise and
improve it. I'm very interested in European History, so I have specialized
on this sector and try to make my scenarios as historically accurate as
possible. What's particular here is that the focus lays on the battlefield,
so there are no technological advances (anyway, there were no major
breakthroughs during the 7 years of fightings) or trade units. Possibly
these would only disturb you while doing your moves. One major change I
made was to let the Royalists have veteran units from the very
beginning. One reason why the Royalists held out so long although being
outnumbered was that they were much more experienced than their Parliamentary
counterparts. There could be a language problem, because I used a German FW
to make this scenario, so please let me know if it occurs.

I. BACKGROUND
-------------
The English Civil War (1642-49) was the conflict between Charles I. and
the Parlamentarians, led by Oliver Cromwell. It resulted from disputes
over their respective prerogatives. Parliament gained decisive victories
at Marston Moor in 1644 and Naseby in 1645. Charles was eventually
captured and executed in 1649. Cromwell later became Lord Protector of the
whole of the British Isles and established a military dictatorship. At the
beginning of the conflict, the Scotts were opposed to Charles for religious
reasons, in this scenario they are allied with the Parliament against him.

II. PLAYERS
-----------
I recommend playing as the Royalists(King Charles), because this is most
challenging, having a smaller number of troops (which is not only historically
accurate but necessary because of the bad AI :) ). Anyway, the CPU isn't very smart,
as usual, so it ruins many units already in the first attack wave. Additionally,
it seldomly protects its cannons when moving them in front of your cities.
These advantages allow you to easily play at deity level, if you know how to deal
with the unrest in your cities, of course. Your first goal as Royalist player is to
defend Oxford, which is your capital and lies between enemy territory. Take care
of Charles...:) Try to defend Sheffield and take Hull as fast as possible.
Manchester is your next victim. A small force has landed in the far southwest.
It should be enough to roll out the lightly-defended cities on the coastline.
Now it's time to tighten the ring around London...
You can decide whether to concentrate on England and sign a peace treaty with the
Scotts or end their revolt by invading Scottland.

Playing on the Parliamentary Side is the easier way. You have a plus of
units and production, which sets you in a better starting position. I
would recommend you to choose deity. Try to hold Hull, if necessary by
sea (I don't think you'll need that). Please don't place too many units on
a single square in front of a enemy city, you risk high losses! You should
concentrate your forces against Oxford, because the loss of their capital
will weaken the Royalists severely. Sheffield has high strategic importance
as well, be sure to capture it immediately. Manchester is strong enough to
defend itself. Now you can divide your army into two parts and take the
cities one-by-one on each side of the Pennines (this is just how I would
do it)...

III. UNITS
----------
This scenario doesn't have many units, and all of them have clear functions.
As Royalist player you have two more units, the King Charles Unit and the
Royal Guard. The Scottish units are weaker than those of the other two players.
But don't mind, I managed to conquer the whole of Britain with the Scotts :)

---Royalists---

Peasant - Has the same function as a settler
Cavalier - Allround-unit, can destroy cavalry and artillery
Cavalry - takes out hostile cannons and is good for exploring (2x view)
Cannon - Looks a bit different than the enemy's one,and is weaker in attack (10p.)
Frigate - Can transport up to 4 units, PLEASE don't use them for sea
            battle against MoWs!
Man of War- Strong Warship, destroys frigates, bombards the coastline.

Roy.Guard - Special unit for the protection of the king.
Charles I.- Your king. He can't defend himself, so take care of him...

---Parliament--

Peasant - see above
Roundheads- better defense than Cavaliers, but weaker in attack
Cavalry - same as Royalists', looks a bit different
Cannon - stronger than the Royalist model (12p.)
Frigate - s.a.
Man of War- s.a.

Field Gun - Heavy-defense and light-attack unit (you cannot build that)

IV. CREDITS
-----------
First of all, many thanks to Christian Schlobach (uzsn8y@uni-bonn.de)
for his ingenious batchfile (sndsetup.bat) that enabled me to save a lot
of space. This file copies the sounds from the main Civ2 sound directory
to the sound directory of the scenario and renames them. I slightly edited
it to create the sound directory automatically. Please be sure to run
sndsetup.bat before playing!

I took the terrain from J. Balsinde's Visigoth scenario, I don't know who
actually created it. Maybe you do? The field gun unit comes from a CiC
scenario. The other units are regular ones or have been created by me.
And who is the creator of this beautiful sheep? Please tell me if you are
this one, you shouldn't be left out! :)

Again thanks for downloading and have a good time playing!
